Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition officially announced

After quite a few leaks the GTA Trilogy has been officially announced by Rockstar. The cumbersomely named Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition will launch on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Rockstar Games Launcher on PC. It is set to arrive “later this year” and no doubt will land before Christmas so we have but a matter of weeks to wait.

The GTA Trilogy pack includes Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. There is no mention of the DLC packs.

“The Definitive Edition will feature across-the-board upgrades including graphical improvements and modern gameplay enhancements for all three titles, while still maintaining the classic look and feel of the originals,” say Rockstar. “We’re extremely excited to share more about these groundbreaking titles in the coming weeks — stay tuned!”

You will note that the words remake or remaster are not used to describe the GTA Trilogy by Rockstar at any point, they seem to be aiming for weird middle ground where the games will run in 4K at 60fps, perhaps with better lighting, but keeping all the old geometry for vehicles, buildings and the like. That’s just a guess by the way, they have not revealed any official specs and the trailer has no gameplay whatsoever which is somewhat troubling given the games are out in weeks.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition will also launch on iOS and Android in the first half of 2022. All existing versions of the games are to be removed from store fronts in preparation for the launch.

Rumours suggest Rockstar Dundee, previously Ruffian Games, is said to be remastering the titles and they will be using the Unreal engine. A recent investor report from Take-Two. In the call the spokesperson stated they company, which is the parent of Rockstar, was working on three “iterations of previously released titles,” et voila, three GTA games.
