Your little one’s ability to recognize shapes and colors will develop gradually with age. For that, Mother’s patience is needed to teach her/him gradually as well. At the age of 1.5 years, your little one is just starting to recognize the similarities and differences in shapes and colors.
At the age of 3 years, then she/he began to really recognize and mention shapes and colors. If your little one doesn’t want to listen to what you teach, you don’t have to worry. What Mother teaches may not be in accordance with the Little One’s grasping power.
There are several ways you can do to teach your little one shapes and colors.
Invite your little one to see and recognize the objects around him, such as toys or objects in the park. While looking at objects, you can name their shapes and colors. Mothers must pronounce the names of shapes and colors with a clear intonation, so that your little one will know the difference better.
For the little one who is 1.5 years old, it is enough to recognize that the shapes and colors of the objects around him are different. For example, the shape of the ball is different from the doll or the color of the flower is different from the color of the leaves.
Next, invite your little one to play while observing the similarities in shapes and colors of objects. You can give your little one colorful balls and ask him to group colors by putting balls of the same color into the basket. You can also take your little one to the park and ask your little one to point to another object that is the same color as the green leaf, for example.
At the next stage, for children who are 3 years old, ask your little one to start naming the color of the object he noticed. For example, say that the color of the tree trunk is brown. You can also ask the color of objects that you and your little one are seeing in the surrounding environment.
Recognition of shapes and colors in early childhood is a process that must be done gradually and continuously. Mother needs to be more patient and keep doing it with love. Mothers don’t need to always devote time to teaching shapes and colors to their little ones.
At any time, you can insert an introduction to shapes and colors. For example, Mother introduces the color of the object that is being held by the Little One, asks the color of the clothes he is wearing, or sings a song that contains shapes and colors. To be sure, these activities should not stress the little one, so it needs to be done while playing and in a relaxed state.
